The work reported in this paper involved the characterization of residential solid waste in Benin metropolis, Nigeria. A site-specific study was carried out to estimate the quantity of residential solid waste generation in the metropolis. Structured questionnaires were applied to collect primary information such as size of households, Educational level, monthly income etc. The study showed that 0.425kg of solid waste is generated per person per day (ppd) in Benin metropolis. The study also showed that over 20% of recyclable solid waste is generated from domestic source of solid waste in Benin metropolis. Some useful suggestions that will help to improve the solid waste management situation in the metropolis were also presented.
