The importance of Artificial Intelligent (Al) in the Chemical Process Industry (CPI) has been presented. The application of knowledge bases in Al for the development of simulation programs and property estimation f6r improved process and product design are discussed, The role of the Human Machine Interface (HMI) and the problems related to such interface that need to be overcome, which limits what presently can be done is analyzed. The paper also discusses in detail the Neural Network System, a new innovation in artificial intelligence and its scope of application.
