MODEL ESTIMATION OF SOIL MOISTURE DEFICIT IN OIL PRODUCING AREAS OF THE NIGER DELTA BASIN, NIGERIA
Obiejesi Luke Ndubuisi
Ogochukwu Samuel Azi
Soil moisture deficit (SMD) in selected oil producing areas of the Niger Delta Basin in Nigeria was estimated and its spatial variation with rainfall investigated. The method applied used Rainfall, Evapotranspiration, Runoff Coefficients and Root Constants to estimate SMD on a daily time step over a period of three consecutive years (2001-2003). Results from the model indicate that the month of February recorded the maximum value of 137mm. The daily results were found to vary from 137mm in February to 7mm in September for Kokori, 5mm in Egbema. 5mm at Obigbo and 3mm at Utorogu. The months of April to September recorded several days of zero SMD. Utorogu site was found to have a better distribution of the daily SMD with a standard deviation of 0.82
